Samoens is an ancient village within the Grand Massif ski area situated below the better-known Flaine. It’s a far cry from many of Frances more modern, functional purpose-built resorts but that’s part of the attraction of Samoens. The medieval centre of Samoens is stunning and has a rustic feel yet retains the friendly charm of an ancient market town.

The village was once renowned for its stonemasons; their work is still visible throughout the local architecture. There's even a botanical garden, constructed in 1906, showcasing more than 8,000 plants from around the world but you’ll have to visit in the summer to appreciate it.

Access to Samoens slopes is via two telecabins, the Grand Massif Express which gives access to the wider ski area including Flaine and the Saix Gondola taking you to Samoens 1600.

The range of pistes will appeal to beginners and intermediates yet there’s still enough runs for those looking for a challenge – try the Gers Bowl. You can’t ski back in to the village, take the telecabin back down, but you can ski in to the next village (Morillon) and then catch the bus back to Samoen.
